Rova Retrospective in NYC, Jan 17-24

Following their November 2015 European Tour and several subsequent Bay Area events and rehearsals, the four gentleman are back out on the road this month to what one could call a "Rova Fest," starting on Sun, Jan 17 with Electric Ascension featuring Nels Cline at Le Poisson Rouge — presented by NYC' Winter Jazzfest, and concluding a week later, on Sun, Jan 24, with the quartet performing some seminal and transitional works at The Stone.

Rova’s Electric Ascension event at Le Poisson Rouge will also celebrate the long-awaited release of John Rogers’ exultant 2012 concert video and revealing documentary, Rova Channeling Coltrane, An All-In-One CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Package to be released on the renowned French label RogueArt and distributed by MVD in North America. This includes: A beautiful concert video of Electric Ascension performed live at the 2012 Guelph Jazz Festival; A documentary on Electric Ascension, “Cleaning the Mirror;” An audio recording of Electric Ascension from Guelph. Check out Rova’s website for details on how to order a copy of the DVD.

A best pick for the Electric Ascension festuring Nels Cline performance in NYC coming from TimeOut.

On Sunday January 17th the festival will close with a John Coltrane project by San Francisco Bay Area saxophone quartet Rova. With an all-star cast of New York improvisers celebrating the DVD/BluRay release of Channeling Coltrane, Rova presents a NY premiere performance of their Electric Ascension – a 21st century reimagining of John Coltrane’s late master work Ascension.  Famed for its monumental scale and raw emotional power, John Coltrane’s milestone recording, Ascension, was released on LP 50 years ago in 1966.  It now gets a 21st century reimagining and arrangement by Rova, and its first NY show at Winter Jazzfest, featuring special guests Nels Cline (who has appeared in all but one of Rova’s 11 performances of this show since 2003), Zeena Parkins, Nate Wooley, Ikue Mori, Trevor Dunn, Gerald Cleaver, Charles Burnham and Jason Kao Hwang, plus the four Rova stalwarts on saxophones.  True to Coltrane’s intentions, the sonic landscape of Electric Ascension changes with every performance, depending on the cast of musicians, and the tenor of the moment.  Julian Lage performs a solo opening set. "Rova is honored to have been invited by John Zorn to present a week’s worth of our music, both past and present at his East Side venue; music presented not only as a quartet but also in several larger ensembles, chosen from the many special projects created over the past 38 years. The four of us have diligently planned for this residency over the past year, and are now ready to execute, one of Rova’s most ambitious endeavors: to reprise nearly 4 decades of Rova compositions, concepts and collaborations."

Rova is available for Nov/Dec dates in Europe with the following projects: Rova Saxophone Quartet, Rova Special Sextet, Channeling Coltrane - Electric Ascension; No Favorites: An homage to Butch Morris.
