Gebhard Ullmann wins the first Berlin Jazz Award

Our very heartfelt congratulations to multi-instrumentalist and composer Gebhard Ullmann for winning the first Berlin Jazz Award. The Berlin-Brandenburg Radio and the Cultural Administration of the Berlin Senate honored the prize to Gebhard Ullmann who has been living in Berlin since 1983 and has shaped the scene in the city ever since.

Matthew Shipp Trio's "Piano Song" To Be Released January 2017: "Henry Rollins first introduced me to the music of Matthew Shipp. Thirsty Ear was marketing and distributing his label 2.13.61 Records for which Shipp was a recording artist. This was in the mid 90’s and the NY jazz scene was something I mostly read about in the papers. Though Henry spoke with articulate passion about Shipp’s energy, drive and heightened musicianship, it was not until I attended a concert that I fully understood his power, fury and otherworldly vision. Shipp’s music was not meant to be polite, it was meant to shake, rattle and challenge your senses with volcanic explosions. And it succeeded." — Peter Gordon, Thirsty Ear

Rova Retrospective in NYC, Jan 17-24

Following their November 2015 European Tour and several subsequent Bay Area events and rehearsals, the four gentleman are back out on the road this month to what one could call a "Rova Fest," starting on Sun, Jan 17 with Electric Ascension featuring Nels Cline at Le Poisson Rouge — presented by NYC' Winter Jazzfest, and concluding a week later, on Sun, Jan 24, with the quartet performing some seminal and transitional works at The Stone.

Achim Kaufmann wins the Albert Mangelsdorff Award

Our hearty congratulations to pianist and composer Achim Kaufmann for winning the much deserved Albert Mangelsdorff Award, also known as the German Jazz Prize. Kaufmann, who also works as a bandleader and improviser, lives in Berlin. The award will be handed to him on November 6 at the JazzFest Berlin, Haus der Berliner Festspiele.
